Could a Functional Test be the answer to your Sugar Cravings?
Updated: May 23
What is functional testing?
If you have just come from my blog; what is really causing your sweet tooth then you will have already read a short introduction to what functional testing is. But for those of you who haven't, functional lab testing offers us much deeper insights into your health so we can treat the source of your symptoms, instead of simply testing for certain disease markers. Here is how it works:
After getting to know you, I decide what test would be the most beneficial for you, for example GI map, thyroid panel, hormone panel etc
I order the test for you through an independent testing company (I work with Genova labs and you can find them here)
The test gets delivered straight to your door
You follow the instructions, take the test and send it off
The results will be sent to me, ready for our next consultation
It is as easy as that!
Why do I need a functional test?
So now you say to me, but Joy, why do I need to spend this extra money when I can get tests done by my GP?
Well, as handy and important as those tests are, when you are tested by your GP, they are often looking for the presence of a certain disease, for example, hypothyroidism or inflammatory markers.
With functional testing we are trying to find the why behind the markers or the imbalance so that we can treat it, therefore preventing the illness and healing the body.
Let me give you an example
Your sugar cravings are wild but you eat a really balanced diet. You're sitting at 11 o'clock at night thinking, 'gosh, I could really go for a tub of ice cream right about now' and then running to the petrol station to get it and eating the whole thing, only to feel awful afterwards.
Now listen, we are all human, we have all been there, and everything in moderation, but I am talking about cravings you can't really explain, that almost frustrate you because you try so hard, this is where I would think of functional testing.
However, it doesn't just stop there. In a consultation you also say to me, I have had this fungal toenail for years now, and no matter what I do, I can't get rid of it! This, paired with the sugar cravings would reinforce the need of a functional test
Tests such as a GI map stool test would be able to break down how much good bacteria vs bad bacteria you have, microbes, parasites, you name it, it shows it. But why is this so important? Because our gut health is paramount, it is where most things stem from, with 75% of your immune system being in your gut to overgrowths of fungi known as candida driving your sugar cravings and fungal infections, we are looking for the why, so that we can stop it.
Why I offer functional testing
I am in the business of changing lives. That is really what it comes down to.
My aim as a nutritional consultant will always to help my clients
transform their own lives,
transform their own health and
transform their own reality, and if I think that a functional test is needed in order for us to do that, then that would be exciting!
I will not:
Test you for things that I don't think you need
Test you unnecessarily
Test for things that your GP could test you for, for example the presence of a certain illness
So, could a functional test be the answer to your sugar cravings?
Don't forget that you can book in for a free 15 minute meet & greet with me where we can start to talk about transforming your health and how exciting your future can be, no strings attached!
As always, thank you for reading and if you have any questions, you can find me at email@example.com
Have a great week,
